Good morning, students! This week, I just want you to look at your own eating habits. Since you aren't in school are you still eating hot Cheetos for breakfast? Are you eating more at home or are you eating out more? I think this book will give you the opportunity to look at both how you eat, as well as how our culture eats.

      *Essential Questions:
      1. Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?
-In my opinion, there is no definite answer, it depends on the circumstance. For example, people in the hospital with health issues are given specific foods and drinks whether they requested it or not. They need to follow what the doctors and dieticians say. On the other hand, people should be able to eat what they want to eat. If you are old enough to make your own choices in life, you should be able to make the right choices in what you are eating without being told.

      2. What choices are you able to make in regard to your diet?
-I am able to eat basically anything I want when it comes to breakfast and lunch. I just use the food we have in the house. Since I dont like to cook, and the food in my house usually requires cooking something, sometimes i dont eat much until dinner.

      3. What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/ drink choices?
-With every dinner, my mom has me and my brother drink milk and eat a salad. To eat healthier, she minimizes the use of red meat, and substitutes it with fish, turkey, and chicken. My mom doesn't fry food that often which is sad, but its healthier.

      4. What/ who are outside sources that mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?
-My athletic coaches help me stay on track with my eating habits. They always encourage me to eat healthier because they want my body to withstand the hard workouts, and become stronger. I eat food that fuels my body with energy.

    Fiber grams (g): .7

    Protein grams (g): 69

    Essential Questions:

Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?
An outside source should be allowed to influence personal dietary choices because not everyone is going to believe an outside source enough to mandate certain foods in their diet and not everyone is going to be influenced to do so or even consider regulation. In reality though, Fast Food Nation does state that various methods used by outside sources such as: "Children's clubs have for years been considered an effective means of targeting ads and collecting demographic information" and strategies used such as "synergy" do make an impact when it comes to influencing children to want to eat at places that serves junk food.

What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?
For myself, I choose to eat healthy on some occasions and other times I do eat unhealthy. However, that doesn't mean I do not eat healthy ALL the time. I do enjoy eating fruits such as oranges and bananas (my favorites) as much as I enjoy eating a bag of Lay's. I choose to not drink carbonated drinks and eat junk food on a daily basis because it always affects my body where I feel bloated and just plain lazy. As for that saying goes "you are what you eat" and what you eat can make you how you are.

What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?
My dad never brings home any type of soda when he goes grocery shopping and chooses only to buy me drinks such as juice, milk, and water since he thinks that it's better for me. I'm honestly just bound to drink whatever is in my fridge because I don't always tell my dad to buy me this and that. My dad isn't a fan of me eating burgers and fries everyday so he tries to make homemade food as much as possible. My dad always confers with me why we should live a healthy lifestyle for the long term benefits and that's probably why my dad is an influence.

What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?
Outside sources such as my doctor is mainly the only person that influences my dietary choices. I see my doctor regularly so it is important for me to stay on track with what I eat and whatever I eat affects my body in a way where I can even tell if what I'm consuming is either good or bad. Since reading Fast Food Nation, I've been influenced not to eat out so much since places like "McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King, etc are chemically designed to taste good". Advertisements such as commercials on television and billboards that are made to influence people like me do lure me in once in awhile since I do have that sudden urge to try their new product on their menu but mostly I just try to stray away from it.

On another note, I've been eating breakfast earlier in the morning than I usually do when we had school but it's still the same, my usual banana and milk. Consequently, I've been eating out more since I hang out with friends and family often.

    Essential Questions:

    1) An outside source should be able to mandate personal dietary choices. If a person is in need of dietary preference, then I think it'd be beneficial for that person to seek help from an outside source like a doctor. Doctors and hopefully your parents, are the main sources for good dietary choices.

    2) In my diet, I am able to decide what I eat for breakfast and lunch. My parents take care of dinner a majority of the time, so I just choose whatever I feel like eating at the time during breakfast and dinner. I know I should be choosing to eat healthier, but I have been so anxious to get out of the house and eat-out, as a way to see what's out there besides the food in my own fridge.

    3) Since it is summer and I am currently driving, I have been having some cravings for food I don't regularly eat, and I buy those foods when I am out. My parents make the food in the house, so I am not given the choice to not eat what I am given. I plan on exercising more to burn off all the calories I gain each day.

    4) Outside sources that influence my dietary choices are my friends and family. The thing is, I don't really eat a lot of variety during the year because Vallejo isn't full of all the different types of food, such as Chinese, Vietnamese, Mexican, etc. I usually eat a lot with my family in the summer as a way to celebrate that the year is over. I eat a lot when I am with my family in San Jose because San Jose has a lot of places to eat, more than what we are limited to in Vallejo.

I know my dietary choices may not be the smart kind, but I will try to cut-back since I have more time to focus on myself. :)

    Fiber grams (g): 17 g

    Protein grams (g): 25 g

    Essential Questions:

Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?
I think an outside source should be allowed to influence dietary choices but not to the point where it is mandated or regulated. It would be nice to show what happens when you overeat unhealthy foods, but in the end people should do whatever they want with their diet. If they want to eat junk food for the rest of their life, let them be. They know it's bad but they chose that lifestyle and will just have to pay the consequences in the future. Parents should be responsible enough to watch what their young kids eat so they can be healthier. The idea of television being the most influential towards your diet is expressed in Fast Food Nation. Studies showed that most kids that watched the commercials and advertisements found them to be true.

What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?
Since I don't drive, I mostly eat whatever my parents made at home. I rarely drink soda and try to have water with me all the time. I include fruits in my diet such as bananas and mangoes because my house always has them around.

What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?
My parents encourage me to eat lots of fruits and vegetables so they incorporate it to the foods they make and buy them constantly. Like what I said, I don't drive so I eat whatever is at home. A way to regulate what I eat, I try not to buy junk food when I visit the grocery store. If I don't buy them, I won't have them at home so I wont be tempted to eat it.

What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?
My doctor and some of my relatives influence my dietary choices. My doctor encourages me to eat healthy and stay on track of things. Some of my relatives have not been eating at all and in result, they take a ton of medication and have to visit the doctor more than usual. They influence me to eat more healthy because I think to myself "Wow, I do not want to ever end up like that when I'm older".

Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?
Yes a outside source should be allowed to help personal dietary choices. It helps them keep them at track on what they are suppose to eat or they like to eat.

What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?
At times I do choose to eat healthy for a bit. Then back to unhealthy foods. So it is an on and off healthy eating. Most of the food I eat are from home since my family rarely eat out.

What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?
My dad always buy water but some times buy soda. Over time I got used to picking water over soda most of the time. Along as my other family members they mostly pick water for drinks.

What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?
Mostly my extended family since when I visit them they would take the rest of the family to eat out in different places. Making it have more variety to my food choices. Along as my cousins who go to the gym and trying to get fit. Makes me feel I should join them one day.

    Essential Questions

SHOULD AN OUTSIDE SOURCE BE ALLOWED TO MANDATE, REGULATE, OR INFLUENCE PERSONAL DIETARY CHOICES?
I strongly believe that an outside source should have the ability to mandate, regulate, and influence dietary choices. A person who lives in a unhealthy way is more likely to improve their life with more help and advice. It benefits that person and helps them realize how important their health is.

WHAT CHOICES ARE YOU ABLE TO MAKE IN REGARD TO DIET?
Like many others I also eat what my parents cook at home. Usually when I'm eating I'll try to avoid food that contains an abundance of oil. I try to eat food and fruits that help me gain more energy and keep me fit. This includes eating salads, mangoes, strawberries, and more. I sometimes will eat various fast foods but I make sure to not make that a weekly habit.

WHAT ARE SOME WAYS OTHERS MANDATE, REGULATE, OR INFLUENCE YOUR FOOD/DRINK CHOICES?
My parents will usually make something before we influence them to get us something else. By doing this they know we have no choice but to eat what's there. Before a new week starts, my parents will usually talk to my siblings and I about what we'll be having for dinner the rest of the week and we talk about different ways we can improve the way we eat. My parents also make sure to incorporate some type of vegetable in every meal we eat.

WHAT/WHO ARE OUTSIDE SOURCES THAT CAN MANDATE, REGULATE, OR INFLUENCE YOUR DIETARY CHOICES?
The main people who can help me with my dietary choices are my relatives and my doctor. Both try to help me and motivate me to live a healthy lifestyle that will provide me with good health and a long life. They also encourage me to take care of myself due to our family history of diabetes.

WHAT CHOICES ARE YOU ABLE TO MAKE IN REGARD TO DIET?

WHAT/WHO ARE OUTSIDE SOURCES THAT CAN MANDATE, REGULATE, OR INFLUENCE YOUR DIETARY CHOICES?
I have relatives who work in the medical field, so whenever I have something unhealthy, they try to stop me from eating those foods and give me alternatives on what I should eat instead.

    Essential Questions
Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?
An outside source should be able to mandate, regulate, or influence an individual's dietary choices. It should be able to make the individual change their diet for the better but the individual should only change their diet when they find it necessary or they are comfortable with the change. Examples of an outside source that can affect an individual's dietary choices include family members, close friends, and doctors.

What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?
A person is able to make every choice regarding their diet. Furthermore, a person should be allowed to enjoy eating whatever types of foods they desire without being pressured by an outside force. A person should only change their diet when they want to and should not be forced. The person may decide to change their diet after experiencing traumatic event (such as a family dying from morbid obesity) but they should only change when they genuinely want to. I personally do not care about what I eat as long as it tastes good. For example, I eat whatever I want and do not feel that I should change my diet because I do not classify myself as unhealthy.

What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?
My food and drink choices are heavily mandated by my family and friends. The foods I eat at home are influenced by my parents who do the grocery shopping for my family, thus they decide what my family eats. When I go out to eat with my family, I order whatever food I want to eat. Whenever I go out to eat with friends my dietary habits change in that I usually order whatever my friends get, also if I eat at a friend's home I just eat whatever their family prepares.

What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?
My parents and licensed officials in the medical field are allowed to affect my dietary choices. Their suggestions toward my diet are important to me because they are supposed to know what is best for me. I have complete faith in them because they have gotten me this far in life and I have been doing quite well.

    Essential Quaestions
    1. Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?
    - In my opinion I believe that an outside source should be allowed to mandate, regulate, and or influence dietary choices given that a person does not have the ability to convince themselves of eating healthier, they need help from other people in order to make the right choices regarding the food they intake. By allowing a person to regulate anothers food intake then that person will realize how making the right choices will impact your life.
    2. What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?
    - Like most people I eat what I am served at home. However, if the food contains meat i tend to remove the meat. Since i am trying to remove meat from my diet. I tend to eat more fruits, fish, and salads. I do have my days where I eat pleanty of unhealthy foods but i try my hardest to stay away from them.
    3. What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?
    - My food and drink choices are primarily chosen by my family and friends. The foods i consume at home are influenced by my parents who purchase the groceries. When I go out to eat with my family, I have the choice to eat whatever I want. When I go out to eat with my friends I still eat what I want but it depends if I am at their household because then I have to eat whatever is provided.
    4. What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate or influence you dietary?
    - My parents, and licensed medicates are allowed to affect my dietary choices. I have full faith in my parents and licensed medicates to help me improve my eating habits.

What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?
-I believe an outside source should be allowed to mandate, regulate, and influence personal dietary choices because i believe that most of the people out there don't have a balance diet and it will continue to be unhealthy for them unless something like an outside source for a healthier dietary choice is there to guide them or give them an idea of what type of food to eat for daily basis. Since the food that my parents cook are somewhat unhealthy, i end up not eating what they made and instead cook for myself. i usually like to make my food in portions when im at home. -My parents usually let me pick whenever we go grocery shopping. When my mom buys soda, she always hides it away from me. She also gives me advice whenever she sees me eating junk food. Essential Questions

1)Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?
Yes I believe an outside source should be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices because they would help an individual have a healthier diet and improve there lifestyle by having that better diet. Outside sources can also serve as inspirations for individuals that want to have better dietary choices.

2)What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?
I'm a picky eater so whatever I eat is my choice. My dad asks me what I want to eat most of the time and I make a lot of bad choices... But I do eat a lot of fruit and at times a little vegetables. Whenever I eat meat, I add some vegetables to the side. So what I eat isn't entirely bad.

3)What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?
My mom tells me a lot that we shouldn't eat fast food a lot and cook more at home, so she sort of helps me have a better diet by cooking homemade food. My parents also nag me to eat more vegetables and lecture me on how vegetables will make my body stronger. That sort of motivates me to eat better!

    Essential Questions:
Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?
1.I think that an outside source should be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices because our health can affect our country or government. The more unhealthy we are the more money the country has to spend on the treatment for patients. The money, that we use to help people that do not want to take care of their body, can be used to give children a better education, help the people living on the streets, and more.

2.What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?
The choices that i am able to make is eating more vegetables and fruits. Also to cut the intake of the amount of junk food that i eat. I should try to eat a balanced meal.

3.What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?
My parents choose what we eat for dinner, so i am obligated to eat what they cook. However, i choose the snacks and other food that i want to eat throughout the day.i choose what i want to eat throughout the day, but for dinner i usually eat whatever my parents cook for me.

4.What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?
My parents and doctors are the ones that can mandate, regulate, or influence my food and drink sources. However, many articles and television shows that i see influence my dietary choices also.

    ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS
Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?
-Personally, I think that an outside force should be allowed to mandate, regulate,or influence personal dietary choices because a person might want to live a healthy life but they don't have the motivation to do it on themselves but if an outside force like a doctor or a parent helps regulate their personal dietary choices, they will get the motivation to live a healthier lifestyle.

What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?
-The choices that you are able make in regard to diet are that you can decide what to eat and if you want to be on a diet or not. People shouldn't tell you what to eat or not and nobody tells me what to eat but I usually try to eat healthy but sometimes, I do eat a lot of junkfood.

What are some ways others mandates, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?
-Some other ways that people mandate, regulate, or influence my dietary choices are that my doctor sees if I have to gain or lose weight when I visit him yearly and he will actually tell my parents how to make me lose weight.

What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?
My outside sources are my parents by they usually try to get me to eat healthy and to not eat a lot of junk food even though I do the complete opposite of that. Also, another outside force is my doctor by he also tries to make me eat to healthy and those are usually the outside forces for a lot of people nowadays.

    Essential Questions for discussion today:

Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?
The outside source shouldn’t be allowed to mandated or regulated, but should be influenced personal dietary choices. We should be influenced because we should at least have the knowledge on what we consume into our body, and what unhealthy foods can do to us. We should be persuaded to eat in a healthy diet, but it shouldn’t be mandated or regulated because people should have the choice on what to eat. If we choose to eat healthy, then great, but if not, then that’s the choice they made.

What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?
Since I can’t drive and buy myself my own food; I just eat whatever is at home. I eat mostly junk food because this is what my family eats. We have a lot of chips, and snacks. We don’t eat vegetables and fruits everyday. We have a lot of soda, but I barely drink them. I try to drink more water, but I love juice.

What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?
I try to stay away from the cabinets full of junk food. Although, I can’t stand it; I just LOVE food and whatever we have I eat.

What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?
My outside sources are my teachers, coaches, friends, and doctors. Teachers as in like Ms. Kearns; she taught me that you don’t have to be unhealthy to eat tasty food. My coaches tell me to eat a healthy diet, so I can be energized and I can be a great Athlete. My friends share their healthy foods with me, and doctors always try to influence me to eat healthy. They tell me to eat vegetables and fruits daily.

    Essential Questions for discussion today:
Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary
    choices?
Yes, I do believe that an outside source can be allowed to mandate and/or influence our personal diet choices. I believe so because in this day and age many people turn to the internet and social networking websites as a part of their daily routine, so people's actions may be more strongly influenced, including the way we eat. Also in some cases, I believe that an outside source may be the exact reason as to why they changed their eating haabits to begin with such as the TV show "Biggest Loser" or the Subway commercial with the guy holding up his former pair of pants that are now too big for him to wear.
What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?
The choices I am able to make regarding my diet depends on what we have in the fridge. Although I really love my junk food, my mom doesn't really buy it for us too have in the house unless I am absolutely craving it. The same goes with soda, we never buy it. So with that said, I don't really have much of an option. My parents usually cook dinner for me and since they too are trying to live a healthier lifestyle, the meals they choose for me aren't bad.
What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices? Other ways people become influenced is through food documentaries on TV and on Neteflix. Most of these food documentaries, similar to "Fast Food Nation" provide statistics and studies that show the different diets of culltures around the world and overall demographic of certain diseases and death rates all around.
What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?
My friends and family definitely influence my dietary choices becasue I am around them the most. My siblings have been juicing lately so that has reflected on me becasuse we have had some extra juice in my house, which I now quite enjoy (especially carrot juice and kal juice). My friends sometimes infkuence me because a lot of them have a bag of my absolute FAVORITE chips ever.. Flamin' Hot Cheetos. Since they are eating it I can't help but take a few handfuls as well, but in perspective I know Hot Cheetos aren;t that great for you.

Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?
I dont think an outside source should allow to mandate or regulate personal dietary choices because you can't just give demands for someone to change their diets. Its how they chose to live their lives with their diet. Instead we should be influenced with the knowledge of healthy living instead of be forced to have a choice of what we can or cannot eat.

What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?
Lately, I stopped drinking soda and drink more than 8 cups of water a day. I also watch my portion sizes and start working out with my friends in the gym.

What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?
I've been seeing documentaries on television about fast foods and what it can do to you which scares me so I'm going to cut down on fastfoods. Also, following a blog about fitness can really motivate you to start working out and eating clean.

    Essential Questions for discussion today:
Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?
What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?
Yes and no. It is good to have people influencing you about losing/gaining weight if needed, But also, It's not good for people to demand you to do things to your body. You have the choice. I know what's good and bad for me but I still choose to consume the bad things. I have the willpower to change anything involving my diet anytime I want.

What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?
When I see the effects of diseases such as diabetes and heart failure caused by the bad food choices my family has made it cares me to wonder if it were I in their place. Also, my mother is a bit crazy about anything I consume wither it be water or food she still continuously not stop worrying and because of that I am able to do things I want.

What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?
MY MOTHER. She's absolutely crazy. If I haven't eaten the whole day and I want to eat something, for example if I choose ramen she'll me this look of disapproval and it causes me to go into a really depressed state where I don't eat at all, OR I eat a lot right in front of her to show that I don't care but that's really bad for me. TIME, lack of time in the day causes fast food to become an option for most people and I. It's faster, easier, less work to just drive to the nearest fast food restaurant then to prepare, cook, & clean.

  21. I like the comments posted so far. However, I would like to see more, "Along with everyone else, my family influences my choices..." Or, "I agree with," ect. Remember, this is a class discussion - not just info for me. I want you to read the posts of your classmates. I am a little surprised so many people think it is okay for an outside source to mandate what you eat. Maybe I need to explain this thought further. In Richmond, a group of people tried to make it illegal to sell soda within a certain area because soda is unhealthy and there was a large per centage of obese people in that area. New York City's Mayor has also tried to mandate that soda cannot be sold in an amount over 22 oz. in a personal cup. Again, because soda is unhealthy. Should government be allowed to do this?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think that government shouldn't be allowed to do this because everyone has their own personal choices. Soda is not the only personal choice people make that causes health problems including obesity.

      Delete
    2. I think it depends on the percentage of obesity and diabetes occurring within a population of people. If the amount of soda bought is pretty high and a lot of people are obviously getting bad results from drinking the soda being sold, I think cutting back would be an improvement. I know it's hard for people to maintain a strict diet, so maybe cutting back would help push them to eat healthier. It would also save a lot of money to not ship sodas to grocery stores, restaurants, etc. We'd be saving tons of money just from not drinking these unhealthy beverages and saving ourselves from bad health.

      Delete
    3. I agree with Marjori because not everyone can afford "good" water just as healthy places are more costly than places such as the dollar tree. The poor tend to eat/drink poorly which totally goes back to why certain people live in poverty. The government can't just mandate illegality of certain products in areas where they just cant afford a healthy alternative. In Fast Food Nation, there are examples of schools in Colorado being sponsored by Coca-Cola just to support their schools. Obese people tend to make themselves obese through their own personal diet choices, not the government. Overall, mandating something because it simply is "unhealthy" doesn't always make it a good thing to do. I think of it as a cause and effect situation.

      Delete
    4. Like what my fellow classmates above said, I agree that the government should not be able to control what we eat or drink. It will just produce more problems if the government continues to tell us what we can and can't drink or eat. Instead I believe the government should educate us on how we can limit and improve our unhealthy ways instead of banning certain things they believe will harm us. People are allowed to have the freedom to eat or drink whatever they want. There are many things worse than soda that contribute to different health problems like obesity.

      Delete
    5. I agree with what Gabriel is saying. I believe that the government could sometimes mandate what the people consume, but i also believe that the people are free to eat or drink whatever they want and the government cannot really control that.I think that the government can sometimes mandate the food and drinks we consume to an extent. However, the government should not do something too drastic. For example, they should not make anything illegal just because it is unhealthy. I think that the government could be able to mandate the foods and drinks we eat because it can affect everyone in the country. For example, the money, that we use to treat and help people who are unhealthy caused by their diet, can be used towards other things that we need for entire country.

      Delete
    6. I think the government shouldn't be allowed because people should make their own decisions on what goes in their body.

      Delete
    7. Personally, I agree with my classmates by the government shouldn't mandate what people eat because it's the person's decision what they want to eat or drink even if the food that they eat is unhealthy. I think that the government could try to help educate young children about the effects and the differences between eating healthy and unhealthy foods instead of trying to ban consuming certain products like soda because the people will know the effects and consequences of consuming soda and might actually stop consuming soda.

      Delete
    8. If the government made soda prohibited then shouldn't they make fast food restaurants that serve unhealthy food shut down service as well? I understand that soda isn't the only thing contributing to obesity. If it's not soda, it's going to be something else that contributes to the obesity trend that is growing. The consumption of soda and other unhealthy food items is based on the individual's decision, just like cigarettes and alcoholic drinks. Going off of what my other classmates said, I do believe that the government can mandate what we consume to a certain extent, but at the same time the population should have proper education on about the effects of unhealthy foods, not just "it's simply bad for you".

      Delete
    9. I think that the government should do this in order to stop health problems. Soda is high in sugar and calories.People need to stop their bad eating and drinking habits. If people continue to drink soda daily then it can cause tooth decay, obesity, weakening of bones, diabetes, risk of osteoporosis, erosion, kidney damage, increase in blood pressure, heartburn, effects on liver, dehydration and cell damage. The government would be doing people a favor. I believe that it's almost impossible to stop people from drinking an enormous amount of soda daily.

      Delete
    10. I believe the government shouldn't be able to do this because people shouldn't be told what and what not to drink/eat based on how healthy something is.

      Delete
    11. I honestly mostly disagree with a lot of you. The government knows that obesity is a problem. America knows it. You guys know it. It's the personal choices that people make, that kill them. Obesity is also common in children. All of you guys are saying "it's the person's choice." They don't make their own personal choices, their parents do. I think it would be fine if the government LIMITS , not completely takes away, foods' quantities based on their content.

      Delete
    12. I agree with a number of others. I believe that the government should not prohibit soda. The choice of drinking soda is an individual's decision to make. This is the same concept as a person's decision to drink alcohol, smoke, and more. I believe that the government can mandate how much we consume to a certain extent. However, I highly believe that some people will not allow this certain amount of consumption to their liking. Their is no point in mandating how much of a certain amount we eat, drink, or anything.

      Delete
    13. I agree with my classmates who say that the government should be allowed to do this. I think it would show people how serious obesity and other health problems are. However, I think the government shouldn't completely take unhealthy foods away since they tend to be cheaper so more people can afford them. If unhealthy foods are limited, I think it would be a good eye opener on how bad the country's diet is. It can be looked at as a way to promote healthier food choices which can influence people's decisions on what to eat.

      Delete
    14. I don't necessarily agree to how the government should be able to ban or take away from others what they're so used to have. But then I also agree since it does harm the health of others and it would be better if the government does take away some other foods that could damage our body systems because of the food we eat that are unhealthy. And if they were to take it away, there wouldn't have to be all these illnesses because of this specific drink or food. So it can go both ways.

      Delete
    15. I respect your opinions, but personally I would have to disagree. I think that instead of regulating the amount of soda allowed in a person's cup, they should focus on adding emphasis on physical education. Patricia made a point when she mentioned that unhealthy food is cheaper. I know personally that with the price of fruits and vegetables skyrocketing, it's easier to purchase food from a fast food place. Since a whole meal there may only get you one apple. I would also like to point out that it is a proven fact that most of the obesity ridden cities are ample with liquor stores but barren when it comes to grocery stores. Maybe if the government built more grocery stores that offer inexpensive and healthy food, the idea of living well won’t be an absurd option but an accessible choice.

      Delete
    16. I absolutely agree, Sydney. I personally believe that the government does have the right to mandate personal dietary choices due to health issues that continue to be a major conflict today. However, if the price of healthier foods rise up, while rather unhealthy foods are cheaper, then the government should find a solution to this if they want to prohibit obesity and common health issues. I do not think that the government should entirely mandate personal dietary choices because people have the right to choose the food they eat, but it is a good idea since major health matters continue to enlarge.

      Delete
    17. I partially agree with my classmates. I think the American government should be able to do whatever it wants, including the limitation of soda. The government was freely elected by the majority of the people and their choices should be respected and obeyed. Of course the people will disagree with some of the choices, but when is every single citizen fully satisfied with their government? Would there really even be any consequences if the government passed laws regarding soft drink limitation? If a government were to make it illegal to sell soda within a city, would it really matter? A person would just be able to go to a different town and purchase soda there and not have any consequences. If the situation in New York City really happened couldn't the consumer just ask for a refill? However, the passing of "soda laws" would only make a major impact on the people if it was enforced throughout the entire country. If that were the case then the Prohibition era would repeat itself, including its inevitable end.

      Delete
    18. I agree with the majority of my classmates but it can also be seen from different angles. I don’t believe the government should just ban a product, in this case soda, just because of the rise of obesity. Many factors contribute to obesity, and not just soda. It is primarily an individual’s choice to consume what they would like; however, these choices may be correlated to an individual’s economic state. Unhealthy foods and drinks are usually cheaper, which is why many people resort to purchasing these foods rather than grocery foods. Reducing the prices of healthier foods may lead to people leading healthier lifestyles. Banning soda would not impact people’s dietary choices, because it is not the only thing leading to health issues and obesity. I think the government should instead stress and enforce the importance of having healthier alternatives, especially to children, because they will grow accustomed to what they eat and may have a bad influence on their eating habits. I do believe the government can mandate what we eat/drink to a certain extent, but people also should have free access to what they wish to consume.

    19. I agree with Marjori because everybody has to make their own choice. If somebody wants to drink soda, let them because it's their body.

    20. I agree with the others- it is a personal choice. I don't think it's right for the govt. to regulate or make these products obsolete. Then again, I also believe some foods/beverages shouldn't exist, period. Especially when they can cause so many health complications and issues. These manufacturers have licenses to distribute these products already, so I don't think the government should be allowed to suddenly prohibit it.

    21. People have the right to eat and drink whatever they chose. The government should not be allowed to ban sodas just because of a high obesity rates. Soda is not the only leading factor in obesity. There are many things that contribute to this epidemic. Humans know what they put into their bodies, they know what is right and what is wrong. The government can not possibly control every single human being on what they put in themselves. In our economy unhealthy food is much cheaper than going to the grocery and buying vegetables, friuts, etc. If the government was to lower prices on healthy products, the human population would be much heathier. However, lowering prices on healthy food does not automatically mean that humans will go and buy healthy products. The government and each community has to help to improve the eating habits. We also have to express the concern about lowering the price on healthy food products which can affect our economy. We all are not aware of all the things that allow farmers to produce our products and the amount of money that goes into the production of each product.

    22. The majority of the comments above definitely side with my opinion. We get our own choice, because we are citizens who live in a democratic country. Although, I disagree on how some of you think that we should cut back on some foods/drinks. It does not matter because people make the change for themselves, not the government. All it takes is discipline. The government should not be overly concerned for illegally selling soda products/ junk food, because these products contribute taxes to the government. Honestly, the government should not be all that worried about selling soda because of high obesity rates, because they should be more concerned of the people that ruin their life because of smoking. Isn't smoking more serious and deadly? The best method that the government can do is to educate the people about proper nutrition and the results of making bad choices (smoking, over eating, etc.) To sum it all up, whether the government bands these products or not, if the people really want the products, they will go out of their way to get access and consume them.

      Delete
    23. I agree with most of my classmates and I also think the government shouldn't mandate soda because it is a person's choice if they want to drink it or not. I mostly agree with Mary and it is true that the government should be more worried about smoking because that is more serious and deadly than food. These obese people can actually make a change on their diet but for the smoker they can be ruined for life and actually kill themselves. Consuming these products also helps the government get money so that doesn't seem like a smart idea to just throw away their money.

    Essential Questions for discussion today:

Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?
-There are many different types of ways a outside source can try to influence a persons dietary choices, but to mandate on which foods a person can and cannot eat is not the way to go. In my opinion if a outside source really feels the need to meddle in someones eating habits i think that they are in their right to give their opinion upon the matter and whoever feels the same way will listen to them and whoever doesn't won't.

What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?
-In regard to my dietary choices I try to eat healthy by eating plenty of fruits, vegetables and by staying away from sugary beverages, but there are so many temptations out there that make it difficult to stick to this eating style choice.

What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?
-Television shows and documentaries somewhat influence my eating habits. When I see a documentary about things like heart disorders and learn about how some types of food are to blame for them I tend to reconsider my eating habits and try to better them so something like that won't happen to me in the future.

What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?
-I'm not the best cook in the world so my mom will usually be the one to prepare the food for us, there are times when she will ask me what i want to eat but most of the time she just cooks whatever she feels like cooking and that's usually what i'll end up eating, so my mom is usually the one to influence and or mandate most of my eating choices.

    Essential Questions

    1. An outside source should and should not be allowed to mandate and influence dietary choices. But and outside source can be anyone from a McDonald’s business merchandiser to your family doctor. The advertisements of fast foods are hard to resist, these advertisements influence our dietary choices. Theyre not healthy ones, so in this case outside sources shouldn’t help influence personal dietary choices. But going to your family doctor and getting a preferred meal and exercise plan is a source that should phase our personal dietary choices.

    2. What I eat is mostly my choice. Healthy or not. I am studying at an urban campus majority of the week, so I have no choice to either bring a lunch of buy lunch. Most of the time I am buying lunch. I have a limited time for lunch, so yes, most of the time I am getting fast food or food to go. Dinner is usually of my mom’s choice or mine. It is usually a home cooked meal. And I’m drinking iced coffee, water, or juiced juice.

    3. My mom, if she has time, makes me lunch to bring to school. But most of the time I’m deciding what I have for breakfast and lunch. For lunch in this urban setting, a few friends and me decide what to eat, though decision is based on how cheap the meal is (“healthy” restaurants tend to be expensive). Dinner is usually a home cooked or a box/canned dinner. My sister juices veggies and fruits and I drink some time to time.

4.. Other students seem to answer this such as who are their personal sources, but the questions says who/what CAN influence dietary choices. From a health mobile app to advertisements for a dollar burger. These are outside sources that compel us whether to eat or not to eat something. We are are own self. Just because our doctor says not to eat something, doesn’t mean we’ll entirely give it up. Sure, it’s our doctor, but our own self makes these choices. They aren’t there when we order a double cheeseburger and they won’t be there when we order a salad instead of a baked potatoe. What I’m trying to say is, anything and anyone can influence our diet, but it’s the dieters choice whether to listen to this source or not.

Essential Questions for discussion today: Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?

I believe if the outside source is truthful and out of innocence then it has every right to influence personal dietary choices in someone's life. A lot of people today are looking for ways to make them feel comfortable/confident about their appearance and if the outside source could help them out then they have every right to influence the public.

What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?

In my regard to diet I eat plenty of vegetables and fruits in my diet as well as drinking plenty of cups of water.

What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?

People try to influence me with persuading words, commercials, lies, and ads (such as on websites).

What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?

Not many sources can mandate me to eat anything yet I eat it sometimes despite the negative things it can do to my body. Even though I eat it sometimes I stay grounded.

Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?
An outside source should be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices in very few situations. If one’s dietary choices are life-threatening, it may be necessary for an outside source to take action to help the person.

What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?
I basically choose whatever I want to eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Personally, I try to eat more on the healthy side, though I do eat what is considered unhealthy often also.

What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?
A lot of the time my parents make dinner and that’s what I’ll end up eating that night, but other than that I choose pretty much everything I eat.

What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?
My friends and family sometimes influence my dietary choices because a lot of the time I’ll just eat whatever they’re eating or we’ll pick something to eat and make it or go and get it.

    Essential Questions for discussion today:

Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?

An outside source should be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices only if it's possible, related, and truthful and can be done to benefit a person's health. If it is just based on saying and not doing, then no they shouldn't be allowed considering that they said it but not even have done it. People can say this is good for you to eat but it most likely is bad for you.

What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?

I try to cut down as much as possible, and if I want to eat a lot, portion or small meals by every hour. I eat fruits or vegetables and drink all the water that needs to be consumed every day, or not more to be hydrated or before every meal so I can feel full and feel satisfied and not get as much food to consume.

What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?

There's all sorts of temptation everywhere. It's mostly on tv, around my house, or outside, like the mall or food places. They influence me to have such cravings for each individual type of food.

What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?

The outside sources would usually be my mom since she encourages me to stop eating such ghastly types of junk foods and not that much sugar considering she doesn't want me to get diabetes like her.

    Essential Questions for discussion today:

Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?
I believe that an outside source should be allowed to influence personal dietary choices for the sake of our health. However, it is up to each individual for his/her food choice, so if one disagrees, then he/she has the right to oppose and petition the outside source.

What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?
In regard to diet, I am able to eat healthier, (non-processed and organic foods), drink more water, and exercise more frequently.

What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?
My parents try their best to limit junk food and processed food items, as make home-cooked meals regularly. We eat out every once in a while.

What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?
Advertisements and commercials regarding food catch my attention instantly, suddenly making me crave the food shown. I am involved in a swim team and I notice how my swim coach eats healthily, usually snacking on granola bars or even fruits and vegetables, motivating me to eat healthier!

-Essential Questions for discussion today: Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?
I think outside sources should not be able to mandate, regulate, or influence personal choices. People should be able to make their own decisions on what they eat healthy or otherwise.

-What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?
I choose what I eat for breakfast and lunch, but my mom or dad normally decides what we're eating for dinner.
What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?
My mom or dad usually decides what we are eating for dinner. They also regulate how often I go out to eat since I have no other way of getting to that place.

    Essential Questions for discussion today:

Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?
This question has no definite answer as it depends on the environment, and lifestyle choices of the specific individual. But, if you want to hire a life coach then I think it should be allowed, but otherwise it is solely up to the person. When it comes to young children their parents should have their best interests at heart.

What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?
This summer I want to try and help myself get healthier, especially since I will not have PE next school year. But as I set my backpack down the final time on June 12 I had discovered that my mom recently stocked the pantries, and temptation awaited me. So I can’t say I stick to the healthy meals all the time. But I try to incorporate healthy snacks throughout the day.

What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?
The media influences my food choices other times. Advertisements on TV or in a magazine will show me an image of a food I have not had in a long time, but now want. Also my environment affects me when, all I’m around is fast food places then I am more likely to want that type of food.

What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?
My parents have the most influence on the food I eat. On account of the fact that I have some pretty bad allergies, and they make sure that the food I eat will not cause me to break out in hives, get on my asthma machine, etc. They also make sure that I eat healthy because of the genetic history of diabetes. But I agree with them because I want to have a lot of energy and lead a successful life.

Essential Questions for discussion today: Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?

I do not believe an outside source should be allowed to mandate one’s dietary choices, but it is important for one to monitor one’s health and be aware of the food they are consuming because it could produce adverse effects if one is having too much of an intake of unhealthy foods. However, we can be readily influenced by seeing the eating habits and lifestyle of our peers and surroundings and can benefit us by following their choices. People should have free will on what their personal dietary choices are, but also have limitations.
What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?
The choices I am willing to make for the good sake of my diet is to incorporate more intervals of exercising throughout my day along with being active, even the simplest degree can go a long way like doing chores, which involves constant movement. I also watch what I eat and consume foods (veggies, fruits) and drinks (mostly water) that are beneficial to my health, giving me energy but also keeping me in a healthy state.

What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?
Others influence my dietary choices through advertisement but also documentaries and articles as well. Being informed by the consequences that can arise of unhealthy foods makes me more conscious as to what I am consuming. My parents also regulate what I eat by the foods they cook; they are mindful as to how unhealthy some choices are and provide healthier alternatives, along with cutting out unnecessary junk food and ignoring the temptation of craves.

What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?
Outside sources that influence my dietary choices include my family, because their eating habits can affect mine by the foods we regularly purchase. We try to lead a healthy lifestyle, with occasional times of eating out together (which includes unhealthy foods), but balance is key to a healthy diet. Advertisements, whether it be on television or billboards, may tempt you but if you have motivation, it can be easily avoided. In fact, it can remind you to eat healthier instead of consuming foods that can potentially harm your health, and my doctor encourages me to have a healthier mindset and to lead a much greater lifestyle.

My friends, parents, and teachers can mandate, regulate, and influence my dietary choices. I would say friends because we eat at fast food restaurants whenever we hang out. Parents, because they cook the food I eat for lunch and dinner. Lastly, teachers because they emphasize the importance of eating a healthy diet, and how a healthy diet can affect our learning abilities.

    Essential Questions for discussion today:
Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?
I don't think an outside source should be able to mandate or regulate personal dietary choices because people should have a choice of what they want to eat. I do believe that an outside source should influence somebody to eat healthy, but that is as far as they can go.

What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?
The choices I make in regard to diet is I eat whatever my mom cooks. My mom likes for us to eat healthy so I eat healthy at home. However when I go out, I eat whatever looks good which is mostly junk food.

What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?
My mom cooks healthy at home so I eat whatever she cooks. My aunts and uncles also force me to eat healthy at their house too.

What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?
The only person that mandates, regulates, and influences my diet is my mom. She'll get mad at me if I eat junk too much, and she'll get mad at me if I drink too much soda. She also tells me to eat more vegetables.

Essential Questions for discussion today: Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?
In my opinion, it's generally up to the individuals if they want to allow another person to regulate their dietary choices. For example, personal trainers help come up with diet and fitness plans- it's their jobs. Then again, they must be HIRED by people to do so. Also, I believe it's okay to suggest or recommend diet plans, but they shouldn't necessarily have another person strictly telling them what they can or can not eat.

What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?
We are able to choose what foods we intake, what exercises we do, and how I choose to stay healthy. I personally choose to go for runs and exercise regularly.

What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?
My mom is currently dieting, so she enjoys sharing with me her fitness plans and likes me to eat with her too. So she helps me choose healthier choices and tries to make me stay away from carbs and sugars, especially since diabetes runs in our family.

What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?
My parents who feed me and provide me food can influence my dietary choices. In addition, so can my doctor. I've had some skin issues and had to visit the doctor/dermatologist, and they suggested that I improve my diet a bit.

  39. Hi Ms. Frisinger's students,
This is Miss Lapid (her teacher friend who helped set up this blog)....well we couldn't figure out how to make a new post, so I had Mrs. Frisinger create a new blog with the gmail address and password she could remember. For the next part of this summer assignment, go to http://aplanguagecompositionmrsfri2013.blogspot.com
    Sorry for the confusion!

    Essential Questions:

1)Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence dietary choices?
In my opinion, I think that outside sources should not be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence the dietary choices of an individual unless the outside source has permission to do so. Although I strongly believe a person should have the right to know what are the ingredients in their daily intake, a source should not strictly tell them what to eat unless told to do so. Also, other people may have more activities than others. In that case, the people who are more active need more calorie intake compared to the people who are not that active.

2)What choices are you able to make in regards to diet?
As individuals, we are able to choose the types of food that we fill our bodies with. I usually eat anything i want. Although during the Fall and Spring season, I personally eat a lot more of carbs and proteins because I am more physically active in those months. My body needs more energy to burn because during tennis and badminton season, we usually practice for about 2-4 hours a day.

3)What/ who are the outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?
People such as personal trainers can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices because those are the people who do that kind of stuff for a living. If the government really wanted to, they can ban many fast food restaurants and can prevent another fast food restaurant to boom. Honestly, my parents can also regulate and or influence my dietary choices because they do most of the cooking in my house.

    1. Sorry. I accidentally skipped an essential question.

4)What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?
Others such as my parents and siblings can mandate, regulate, or influence what I eat and drink by not bringing home junk food. As for my parents, they cook home cooked meals daily and they usually add at least 2-3 different vegetables that act as a main ingredient.

  41. Good morning AP students. I'm sorry to switch blog spots on you, but those of you who know me, know I'm not extremely technologically proficient and that a fellow teacher is helping me set up the blog. Unfortunately, I can't identify which e-mail address goes with BlogSpot #1 and thus couldn't create a new topic at the top of the page - which meant we were going to have to scroll to the bottom all of the time and that could end up taking up some time, as the summer goes on. So - here is the link to the other BlogSpot. Please pass the word on to your classmates:

This week, I'm including a food article link.

Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?
I think an outside source should be allowed to influence dietary choices but not to the point where it is mandated or regulated. We should be allowed to feel free to drink or eat anything we feel. If they want to eat junk food for the rest of their life, let them be. We know how bad the food is for you but we also need to learn how to resist it knowing the consequences.

What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?
My doctor and some of my relatives influence my dietary choices. My doctor always suggest me some ways i should do some things healthier. I have family who haven't ate or eat right at all. It shows me what i actually have to do. It makes me feel good about the choices i make.

    Essential Questions for discussion today:
    1. Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?
I don’t believe an outside source should be allowed to mandate one’s dietary choices, but it is important for one to monitor one’s health and be aware of the food they are consuming. By eating too much junk it could lead to adverse effects. People should have free will on what they want to eat because it’s their own choice to eat healthy or not. However, one should keep track and remember that “fast food” is not primarily a meal.

    2. What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?
This summer since I am taking P.E at school, I am trying to become healthier physically and mentally. Unfortunately, as I set my bag down and walked immediately to the kitchen my mind started to wander. Food is everywhere, the scent alluring me. But I try to withstand those cravings with a banana or apple. I personally want to be fit and healthy, but fast food is easy and convenient when I’m hungry. Hopefully I can cut out almost all fast food from my life and stick to my lean and greens.

    3. What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?
I think a person’s environment can influence our eating choices. In our current age, we are living in a fast lifestyle in a booming society. For example, if you live in the city, food is everywhere. Onto the next street-maybe around the corner, but the deli or McDonald sign will be noticeably visible when passed by. However, if you live in the countryside, you grow your own food. See how it’s

    4. What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?
I firmly believe that personal trainers can mandate, regulate, or influence our dietary choices. Personal trainers base their jobs off of dietary skills making anyone in shape better than before. Commercials, as well, can really affect our choices of food. McDonalds has a variety of commercials directed solely to kids. Without knowing the consequences of fast food and its nature, we as a society are tumbling down towards obesity.

    Fiber grams(g)- 4.6
    Protein grams(g)- 36.3

    Essential Questions:
(1)Q: Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?

A: An outside source shouldn't mandate or regulate a person's dietary choices because its their body and health and they can do what they want. But they can influence one's person's health and help them make right choices but they shouldn't force them.

(2)Q: What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?

A: In my choices the past year I have decided to not drink soda and only drink healthy drinks such as fruit drinks, water, milk, and tea. The only soda I would drink is the natural sierra mist, But I rarely have it. I've also have been getting into the habit of having a side plate of vegetables in my dinner. I eat less meat than I used to. I only eat beef and chicken. This year I am committing myself to eat no hamburgers. I haven't had a burger since the beginning of this year.

(3)Q: What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?

A: My mom would always cook a side of veggies with dinner and chooses fat free food. She isn't always healthy and she does have a weakness with having sweets. She would sometimes force me to eat every 2 hours making me eat little things. But I actually help her into knowing a good diet and not to eat to much when not needed. I don't like how she wants me to eat meat all the time and she says I always need it, but I try to explain to her how meat isn't the only thing with protein in it and that there are other good foods. Now she's getting into the habit of buying other foods than just meat all the time. But I know shes just being a worried mother and doesn't want me to get sick. So I still eat a little meat there and now just for some health it gives.

(4)Q: What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?

A: The only outside source that can mandate or regulate my dietary choices is myself. I choose what is best for me and how I want to eat because it's my body. I choose to stay healthy. I'm not trying to find ways to loose weight. I become influenced by reading books about healthy lifestyles and also by my doctor. But the most influenced person I choose is my sister because she knows many things about nutrition because she has studied it and I learn from her.

On another note: I have been eating breakfast much more better than I have on school mornings. But I always crave and want chips all the time and its a big weakness that I have. I don't really crave much sweets. I feel like I eat more when I'm out with friends and family.

    Essential Questions for discussion today:
Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?
    - I do not think that an outside source should mandate or regulate personal dietary choices, because we all have different preferences in life. Not all people are the same, in terms of culture, status in life, health condition, financial capacity and outlook in life. They could create programs that will help to educate people about the good and bad effects of foods we intake. Outside sources could influence people for dietary choices through media, but the choices will still depend on the person.

What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?
    - Although I may eat unhealthy, I workout on a daily basis to stay fit. I also make sure that I have my daily intakes of fruits and plenty of water.
What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?
    - The government mandates and regulates no alcohol for people who are underaged. Through advertisements and motivational/fitness accounts on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, they constantly help to influence me to living a healthier lifestyle.

What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?
    - the government, doctors, nutritionists, church (religion), and my mother.

    Essential Questions:

Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?
    - Yes. If, for example, Bob, is making bad, unhealthy choices then, for example again, Will, should give helpful advice. Will should only restrain to influencing in my opinion, because if Will starts to tell Bob what to do, Bob will either get irritated or rely on Will too much. Bob should take control of his own body and Will should support him. Only higher authorities like doctors should be able to tell you what to do.

What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?
    - I chose what I eat in every meal. I stray away from unhealthy things to have more energy for the things I want to do. Occasionally I have McDonald’s and In-n-Out. I enjoy it but during and after consumption I feel guilty so I tell myself to work out or run later.

What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?
    - Color guard is the biggest way for me to get fit. Since it’s a sport (but not treated like one) I get the health benefits of an athlete and a dancer. Another influence would be the internet since there’s many health websites with facts and opinions out there.

What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?
    - The instructors and captains for color guard are the equivalent to coaches and leaders so we basically have the same drill as other sports. They influence and push us to our limits and extend our already high goals. Other influencers would have to be our parents, since they care about us the most. Another would have to be celebrities that we idolize. Since we follow and look up to them, we would follow what they would do.

    Essential Question:

Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?
I think an outside force should be allowed to influence personal dietary choices but not mandate or regulate it, and should only be allowed to influence if it is a reliable source. If your doctor tells you that your diet needs to improve, that’s a reliable source that you should take to heart. But if they strap you down and only allow you to eat certain foods, then you’ll only crave the bad ones more. There’s a balance between everything and I know from experience that when I can’t have dessert, I want it even more.

What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?
My mom is super health conscious so a lot of healthy choices I make in foods are because of what I learned from her. My problem is sweets and amount of food because I’m hungry a lot so those are the bad choices I make.

What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?
My parents mostly mandate and regulate my food only when I eat unhealthy for a long time, but they are constantly influencing my choices. I step back a lot when I want to pig out and know that they are going to ask me what I ate that day, and I won’t want to tell them all of the horrible decisions I made.

What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?
Like I said in the last question, my parents are that type of outside force that affects my decisions but sometimes my friends can be. It’s not that I am scared of what they’ll think it’s just that I’ve told them about my new exercising habits and I want to show that I was being truthful.

    Essential Questions :

    1. Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?
What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?

I believe that whether an outside source can influence personal dietary choices depends on the situation the person is in. If the person was very overweight and at risk of heart failure and a doctor told them that they were not allowed to eat certain foods would be a good example. They were told to change their diet to accommodate their lifestyle and health. In my own experience, I'd have to say that my diet has not been the best due to slight eating disorders and other personal situations. I now know that I should start eating healthier but can treat myself to junk food once in a while. I know that my eating habits are different and I cannot consume a large amount at once, which I researched to be healthier than three large meals a day.

    2. What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?

My mom tends to buy the groceries since she is the one that cooks the most in the family, and she usually cooks in a healthy manner. I noticed when my dad or little brother goes there is junk food that was purchased. This makes me want to snack on these items even thought I know that they're not good for me.

    3. What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?

The main people who influence my diet would be my family since I eat with them the most. When I am sick my doctor also can influence my diet so I won't risk my health more. I believe that food advertisements can also be another outside source that can influence a lot of people's diets because these tend to make us crave these foods and want to eat them, no matter whether they're healthy or not.

Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?
It depends on the source because if you don't care about what you eat and you think it's your choice on how to feed your body, then a source shouldn't be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices. But if you plan on eating healthy then an outside source, as long as it is healthy, should be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices.

What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?
I don't usually have a choice on what I eat because my mom makes me eat what she cooks in the house. I usually eat a lot of junk food because in my mind, I know I'm going to burn it off the next day because of basketball. But I do eat fruits whenever I see them in the fridge.

What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?
Some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence my food/drink choices is if I see food that looks good or smells good in other people's hand. A mouth watering commercial can make me crave a certain food for days.

What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?
Since diabetes run in the family, I'm scared to eat a lot of sweets in one day. My parents help me in what I eat because if they know I'm eating too much junk, they'll tell me not to eat it.

Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?
I think it all depends on whether you care about eating healthy or eating unhealthy. You should definitely let an outside source positively influence personal dietary choices. For example, if someone were to tell you that your eating habits have been negatively affecting your life, then you'd want to make some changes.

What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?
In regards to my diet, the only choices I am able to make is what I am eating for breakfast, lunch, snack, and what i drink. I never usually get to pick dinner because i just eat whatever my mom cooks. And normally i don't eat a lot of junk food because my mom barely buys any, but if i do eat some i don't worry because i'll work out the next day at practice.

What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?
Some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence my meal is if someone has food that i have been craving for a while. Then i would want to get some.

What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?
My parents and coaches are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, and influence my dietary choices. As an athlete, of course your coach expects you to stay in shape and your diet plays a big role in order for you to stay in shape.

Essential Questions for discussion today: Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?

I personally don’t agree that anyone should be able to control anyone’s personal dietary choices. Yes, this person may be obese and may need to lose weight. But it is also their life, not anyone else’s right? I think anyone should have the right to eat what they want, even if it isn’t the healthiest choices. It is not my life.
What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?

In my household we don’t eat a lot of junk food or fast food. Yes, we have the occasional pizza or burger. But in my house I am able to have fruits and vegetables and even healthy snacks to eat instead of junk food. Almost every meal we have together consists of vegetable or healthy alternative to the usual junk.

What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?

Ways my food is mandated is by what my parents plan on eating that day for family meals, or if they do not allow me to eat fast food that day.

What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?
My food can be mandated by the amount a restaurant gives me in one serving.

Essential Questions for discussion today: Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?

-In my opinion, I don't think outside forces should be able to regulate what you eat. That's not always possible though. You could be in a rush to go somewhere (a job for example) and you wouldn't have enough time to make yourself a healthy meal. So where do you go for a quick meal? A fast food restaurant, McDonald's, Burger king, Taco Bell, Wendy's, etc. Other than the "I'm in a rush and hungry" idea, I don't see why an outside force should be able to regulate, mandate, or influence our dietary ideas.

What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?

-I can choose what I get to eat. My parents usually buy fruit as well as junk food. So I could make the smart and healthy choice and snack on some apples or oranges. Yet, I find myself craving a bag of Cheetos, and choose to eat those instead. Also, knowing how to somewhat cook has opened up my options in choosing what I eat. Instead of eating a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch, I could make myself some eggs.

What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?

-My food/drink choices are mandated by my parents. Most meals they cook have vegetables that my mom makes sure I get a big helping of. Also, my family eats pizza on a regular basis (once a week), even if it may not be the healthiest of choices for our family.

What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?

-My parents are the people that can mandate, regulate, or influence my dietary choices. They choose what to buy us for food and drink. My parents never really buy soda, which is a good thing i suppose. Drink wise, they buy milk, juice, and gatorade. Other than that my parents don't really buy anything to drink. Food wise, my parents buy regular food (Fruits, vegetables, meat, chicken, and fish).

Q: Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?
A: Outside sources should not be allowed to mandate or regulate personal dietary choices. We live in America and we should have the freedom to eat whatever we want. I believe other countries should have the freedom to eat whatever they want as well. One should live his/her life however he/she wants. Although, I understand some religions require abstinence and I totally respect that. But still my opinion is that people should eat what they want. Outside sources should be allowed to influence what we eat for our benefit. For example, commercials portraying soda in negative way helps so that people will be scared to drink something unhealthily packed with sugar such as soda.

Q: What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?
A: I eat anything I want and my family allows we to as long as I'm eating healthy with everything in moderation. I completely agree with my family on that which is why I am able to eat what I want. What we eat is mostly based on what we all would like to eat and is healthy.

Q: What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?
A: Since the rest of my family works, they decide what we eat. But often times I go grocery shopping with them so we compromise on what we would like to eat. Since my mom is a nurse she knows a lot of nutrition and she tries to scare us into avoiding unhealthy foods like too much dark meat and baked goods.

Q: What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?
A: The documentaries we watched in bio-med really influenced my dietary choices. Now, I don't eat as much beef and pork, and I tried drinking almond milk. My family also influences my dietary choices.

1)Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?
What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?

An outside source should be allowed to influence one's personal dietary choices for the well-being of the person. Outside sources should not be allowed to mandate or regulate what a person can eat. An overweight person can receive advice from his doctor to avoid certain types of foods but it is up to the person whether or not he chooses to take the advice. This type of influence is good rather than the doctor forcing the person to eat certain types of food. The decision is solely up to the person to watch what he or she eats and to maintain a balance between the healthy foods and the non-healthy foods, i.e. fast food. In my case, I try to keep a balance between the healthy and non healthy foods. My mother does not pay attention to portion size most of the time so it is a bit of a hassle to constantly remind her of how much she should put on the plate and not to create a mountain on the plate. I choose to stay away from desserts since they do not tickle my fancy.

    2)
What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?

My mother is the only one who buys groceries in my household, so the certain types of foods and drinks in the house are based on what she decides to pick up. This deeply affects the way I eat since I am limited to only the food that is available in my house. Junk food is also frowned upon by my parents, which creates a barrier between junk and me in this house.

    3)

What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?

The people who influence my dietary decisions are my family, my friends, and my doctor. They constantly give advice on what to eat and what is considered bad for my health. Restaurants can regulate how much food someone eats by the portion size that they hand out. Some restaurants give the same food amount as the size of one's palm.

    Essential Questions for discussion today:

Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?

An outside source should be allowed to help influence a person's dietary choices in terms of a health change. Many people in our world are unable to push themselves towards a better and healthier lifestyle thus causing them to slump in their chair and continue to crunch on those hot cheetos, so an outside source is sometimes a must. One can think of such sources to be a doctor, family, friends, or crazy personal trainer, all of which that want to help that person improve their life. However these sources only have so much power and may not be enough to motivate one to switch the cheetos for carrots. In the end the only real source that can make a vast amount of people wake up from their junk food slump is the results of a test that state that they are over weight, headed towards clogged arteries, or are getting a triple bi-pass.
So the idea of allowing an outside source to influence or regulate one's dietary choices is something that can help save a person's life.

What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?

I literally can make any choice about what I want to eat as long as its in my house or my mom is in the mood to drive and get it for me. Ultimately I do try to stick to a healthy diet but I do have my occasional day where I binge.

What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?

The main influence on my diet are my mom's constant reminders of what weight I want to achieve and if I really want to blow all that hard work I've done at the gym; another way my diet is influenced is through my mom's support of wanting to be healthy as well. So the biggest source that influences and mandates my diet is my mother.

What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?

Asides from my mom the rest of my family can play a huge part in what I eat by simply coming over. When all my brothers come over with their wives and kids I simply tell myself to enjoy their company, even if that means going a little overboard in my food portions. Another is my doctor who always reminds me of how good it is to be healthy.

Essential Questions for discussion today: Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?

yes, it should be allowed to influence personal dietary choices because not everybody can be determined to do something without someone helping them and pushing them to the limit. I was the same way until I had realized that if somebody else believes in me then I should be able to believe in myself and that is what drives me to be determined.

What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?

I stick to a diet called the specific carbohydrate diet. This diet does not allow me to eat sugars or very many starches and it keeps me eating healthy.

What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?

I'm influenced by my parents and my grandparents, however, my main influence are athletes. I am very athlete mostly because growing up I watched a lot of sports and they are very healthy. I want to be like that when I grow up so I try my best to stay healthy.

What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?

My entire family are very caring about my health mostly because of what I have been through in my life. I am very appreciated by how they think and care about me.

Essential Questions for discussion today: Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?

Of course we should let an outside source help us regulate our dietary choices. I would not even excerise or eat my vegetables without my dad checking to see whether I eat them or not, otherwise I would be certain to throw them away. >.<

What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?

Well most of the time my dad chooses what I eat regarding my diet but when it is somewhere not at home I kinda choose to consume more than I should, eat to excess, and sometimes I just feel like Napolean when he drinks to excess in the book Animal Farm.

What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?

Well the media has always gotten me the sense that beautiful women should be like these women with skinny legs, flawless skin, and generally fit so I try to strive to be like them but also maintaining a space between what I am now and what I could be so I wouldnt lose myself to the media.

What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?

My dad, tennis coaches, and my religious beliefs have gotten me into some ways to get away from too much food at once, like my dad would never buy anymore snacks once he feels like I not getting skinner. With my coaches we made a dare to each other that we would give up a food product that we liked for the following week til we see each other again so that I can stay in shape. My religious beliefs got me into fasting for a certain amount of time so that I can send my needs up where I do not really need them.

    Essential Questions for discussion today:
Should an outside source be allowed to mandate, regulate, or influence personal dietary choices?

An outside source should be allowed regulate and influence but when it comes down to mandate it depends because if it is for health reasons like obesity then yes but if there is no reason no because if the outside source gives you food that you don't like I would be upset because i want to eat whatever i want.

What choices are you able to make in regard to diet?

The choices that i am able to make in my diet are not many but
i can choose to eat less, eat healthier foods like fruits and vegetables

What are some ways others mandate, regulate, or influence your food/drink choices?
The school mandates me by only allowing me to get lunch once and my mom regulates me by giving me what ever she makes. Others influence by suggesting a healthy food.

What/who are outside sources that can mandate, regulate, or influence your dietary choices?

The school mandates what i eat by only allowing me to get lunch once, mom regulates me and both my parents influence me on what i eat.
